Michael is a Director of SQW, a leading independent provider of research, analysis and advice in economic and social development.

Michael Frearson first joined SQW from the Learning and Skills Development Agency (Research Manager) in 2004 and led the development of our work on children, young people, employment and skills until 2011. Michael returned to SQW as Director in 2015, following three years working independently with RAND Europe (Research Leader), the National Foundation for Educational Research (Associate and Business Development Manager), The Association of Bikeability Schemes (Director), and Regenfirst (Associate).

Michael has 20 years' experience working with schools, further and higher education and work-based learning, mostly in public policy and professional practice research, development, training and evaluation roles. With SQW he has directed more than 50 projects for national, regional and sub-regional clients on topics ranging from high-profile evaluations of public policy interventions to sector-based assessments of skills needs and training supply, feasibility studies and options appraisals, and local skills strategies and action plans. Michael's SQW clients include central government departments, national and regional agencies, sector skills councils and professional bodies, further and higher education funding councils and institutions, local authorities, and voluntary and private sector organisations.

Michael holds a first class BA (Research) Honours degree and a Doctorate in history, and is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
