Market Data Service Launches Market Category Reports to Help Industry
With value sales down 8% at the half year mark on top of an 18% decline in 2022, 2023 has been a tough year for most of the cycling industry. To coincide with the release of its mid-year Market Data Service report, in late September the Bicycle Association hosted a members’ and subscribers’ webinar with BA’s Head of Insights, John Worthingon, to comb through the numbers.
The webinar was the BA’s most well-attended, signalling the industry interest in using data to help boost sales. More than half of attendees who completed a poll around stock recovery timescale think that it will be some time yet until the industry recovers.
In his update, Worthington reported that there was much to be concerned about but with overall volumes flat to 2019 and all areas in volume decline apart from e-bikes vs the pre-pandemic period.
However, Worthington also highlighted an improving performance in Q2 2023 and road and gravel mechanical bikes and e-MTB’s outperforming the rest of the cycling market.
The event also saw the launch of a new category specific data report service available online from the BA Covering any one of over 100 categories or sub-categories and powered by MDS, the reports detail annual market size (value and volume) from 2018, ASPs, channel, segment and brand analysis. They cost £500+VAT, with BA members enjoying a 20% discount.
The BA finished the webinar with an offer of a FREE “market data MOT” for any of the 300+ businesses already contributing data to the service.
“Market data is great for understanding top-line trends” said David Middlemiss, Associate Director at the BA, “but it is also a really useful benchmarking tool to spot real opportunities tailored to your business in a tough market”.
Businesses wishing to take up the offer of a FREE market data MOT or just find out more about the service should contact the BA.
The BA Market Data Service Mid-Year report draws on a multitude of other data sources in addition to a wealth of qualitative input from industry leaders within BA membership. Worthington himself has five years’ experience of reporting on the cycling market, and over 15 years’ experience as an analyst across wider consumer travel, tourism and other leisure markets.
The full report is also available to buy now through the BA website at a cost of £1,499, or £499 for BA members.
